Summary
A virtuoso curiosity-driven investigation of the Manhattan Project's cluster of Hungarian-born supergeniuses (Szilard, Teller, Wigner, von Neumann — the 'Martian scouts in Budapest' joke). Scott demolishes the easy explanations in turn: not the legendary teacher Laszlo Ratz (Teller/Harsanyi weren't his students), not one school (rival Budapest gymnasia produced equal talent — Soros, von Karman, Polya), not 'Hungarian education culture' (von Neumann, Erdos, and Gabor were self-taught prodigies before formal schooling). The pivot: every one of them was Jewish — reducing the puzzle to Ashkenazi intelligence, for which he finds the Cochran-Hardy-Harpending heterozygote-advantage theory (persecution-driven selection for cognitive jobs; the sphingolipid/DNA-repair genetic diseases) compelling. Why Budapest? It was 25% Jewish ('Judapest'), but normalized by Jewish population Germany produced equally (just dispersed/less salient); why 1880-1920? Jewish emancipation (the first free generation) to the Holocaust. Lands on a gloomy synthesis — centuries of untapped potential, realized for one generation, then 'a psychopath with a stupid mustache killed everyone involved' — plus the wistful 'we don't get von Neumanns anymore.'
Why this score
Quality 84 · Excellent. One of SSC's most famous and best essays — a masterclass in investigation: systematically dismantling the comfortable explanations, landing on a population-genetics + concentration + timing synthesis, and closing with an unforgettable historical gut-punch. Beautifully written and intellectually thorough. High Excellent, with Trapped-Priors/Hoover (83-84). Its load-bearing mechanism (the contested CHH heterozygote-advantage hypothesis) is appropriately flagged by Scott as a hypothesis; the underlying Ashkenazi-achievement data is robust.
Claude’s paradigm shift 68 · Notable shift. The investigative reframing — reduce 'why Hungary' to 'why Ashkenazi' to 'concentration + emancipation-to-Holocaust timing' — is a fresh, non-obvious synthesis, even though it assembles existing pieces (CHH, demographic data). Notable, high.
Real-world impact 3 · Moderate. A widely-cited, discourse-shaping essay within the rationalist/IQ-adjacent niche (the 'Hungarian genius' story, CHH popularization); influence is elite-conceptual, not material change to ordinary lives. Moderate (niche).
