Summary
A two-part science romp. First: altitude/hypoxia and obesity -- US obesity maps onto topography (Rockies, Appalachians visible), people at sea level are ~5x likelier to be obese than at 500m even after controls, corroborated by 'altitude anorexia' studies and a randomized soldier-deployment design; the active ingredient seems to be hypoxia (and nicotine's appetite effect, not the tobacco-lobby's hypoxia screed). Then a more contrarian riff: did rising CO2 cause the obesity epidemic? Scott clearly enjoys the theory (elegant; would help sell climate policy) but debunks it -- the key study has n=6 at 50x atmospheric CO2 and a non-significant result driven by one hungry subject, the geography doesn't fit (Japan: high emissions, low obesity), and submariners (10x CO2) don't gain weight. Verdict: drop to a lower contrarianism level (xenoestrogens, gut microbiota).
