Book Review: Ages Of Discord — Book review · Sep 2019

Summary

A companion excerpt-collection to the Ages of Discord book review (SSC-808): curated Turchin passages on US unity-vs-polarization over time — the 1946 APSA committee demanding MORE partisanship, the violent 1850s Congress (Brooks caning Sumner; drawn pistols), the ~1820 unity peak, elite overproduction (office-seekers), and the Ngram 'cooperation' culture-metric. Mostly Turchin's words with light framing, elevated by one genuine Scott-original observation: 'whiteness' may have been forged in opposition to Indians (more salient to Northerners) as much as to Black people.

Why this score

Quality 61 · Strong. Solid: a companion quote-collection, thin on original contribution but lifted above the bare-excerpt band by the one sharp Scott observation (whiteness-vs-Indians). 61.

Claude’s paradigm shift 40 · Moderate. A companion excerpt post, low novelty. B40.

Real-world impact 2 · Minor. A companion to a real book review within the cliodynamics discourse; minor. RWI2.
