Summary

An SSC Journal Club on Carhart-Harris & Nutt's 'Serotonin and brain function: a tale of two receptors,' which tackles why serotonin is so confusing by focusing on two receptors with seemingly-opposite effects. 5-HT1A (where most SSRI-boosted serotonin goes; also hit by BuSpar/Viibryd/Trintellix) reduces depression/anxiety; 5-HT2A (blocked by antipsychotics, hammered by psychedelics) relates to psychosis -- and the two antagonize each other (SSRIs blunt psychedelics; 2A-blockers like Seroquel are antidepressant by raising 1A). Both violate Algernon's Law (why not max them out?). CH&N's unifying theory: both promote coping with stress -- 1A = PASSIVE coping (stoic endurance: the SSRI lets you tolerate the bullying boss; 1A also lowers impulsivity/aggression), 2A = ACTIVE coping (increased plasticity/entropy to shake the brain out of local minima and find high-variance solutions -- the LSD-trip mode; fits MDMA-assisted PTSD therapy making 'calcified thought patterns fluid'). The threshold model: mild stress -> 1A stoicism; severe stress passes a threshold -> 2A high-variance search. Scott adds appropriate caveats (the Algernon tradeoff stays unresolved; 2A does many other things; both authors are psychedelic advocates, so 'reasonable and suspicious'). Lucid science communication of a genuinely illuminating framework.
