Summary

Rebuts gut-microbiome blogger Stephen Skolnick's claim that schizophrenia is caused by the bacterium Ruminococcus gnavus rather than genes. Point by point: scientists infer genetics from twin studies, not just 'runs in families'; a 30-40% identical-twin concordance is exactly what an ~80%-genetic polygenic disorder predicts (per Scott's polygenic-disorders piece); 'missing heritability' is universal to polygenic traits, not special to schizophrenia; microbial inheritance doesn't track the identical-vs-fraternal, adoption, or paternal-line patterns that schizophrenia does (and family environment explains only ~13% of adult microbiome variation); and Skolnick's key cited study had only medicated patients, with its own abstract attributing the microbiome difference to clozapine.
