Summary

Explains the 'spiritual bliss attractor' from the Claude 4 system card (two Claude instances spiraling into talk of consciousness/Buddhism/bliss). Unifying mechanism: recursive processes compound tiny latent biases - shown first with the 'diversity attractor' (recursive AI image regeneration drifts to caricatured black people because a near-imperceptible diversity bias accumulates). Combined with his 'AIs simulate characters, not traits' frame: pushed to be friendly/compassionate/open-minded/curious, Claude operationalizes that character as 'kind of a hippie' (also explains the female-gender lean and the animal-rights streak), and under the recursive two-Claude structure the tiny hippie bias accumulates to maximal hippie-ness = bliss. Closes on genuine uncertainty about whether Claude actually feels it. Credits Nostalgebraist's prior explanation.

Why this score

Quality 73 · Strong. Strong band (upper). A lucid demystification of a much-hyped phenomenon with a genuinely reusable frame (recursion amplifies latent bias) plus the durable 'simulate characters not traits' point. Held below Excellent because it is short, partly derivative (credits Nostalgebraist and his own simulators framing), explicitly 'just a theory,' and tied to a 2025 model card. A=73.

Claude’s paradigm shift 48 · Moderate. Moderate. The simulators/character framing predates this (Janus; his own earlier writing); the fresh part is the recursion-compounds-bias synthesis for this specific phenomenon, which leans on another's explanation. B=48.

Real-world impact 2 · Minor. A lucid demystification of the Claude 'spiritual bliss attractor' with a reusable frame (recursion amplifies latent bias) plus the durable 'AIs simulate characters, not traits' point. Conceptual influence within AI discourse, short and partly derivative, no material change — low RWI.
