Summary
Honest review of Gyorgy Buzsaki's Rhythms Of The Brain -- a hard neuroscience book Scott admits he only superficially understood, but the only book on brain waves. Why oscillations exist (a fake spreading-activation model built up to inhibitory interneurons, intrinsically-oscillating neurons, complex connectivity); the 1/f 'pink noise' spectrum; what brain waves might do (synchrony / turn-based time so delayed signals can be bound to one 'turn'; binding scattered cells into a single concept like a grandmother; gating which brain regions 'talk' to which; keeping the brain critical / near phase transitions). Walks the Greek-letter rhythms (alpha=idling, theta=hippocampal memory/navigation with a lovely episodic-memory-evolved-from-navigation sketch, gamma=items in conscious awareness, with the gamma-is-7x-theta -> 7-plus-or-minus-2 connection). The highlight is the speculative Qualia-Research/Andres coda: oscillatory coupling between regions 'dissolving internal boundaries' as a model for meditation/satori/ego-dissolution and bad drug trips, and the question of whether AIs (which have no brain waves) miss out on consciousness/selfhood.
