Summary

Connects two clinical facts -- melancholic depression is worst on waking and lifts over the day (and ~70% of treatment-resistant depression remits after enough sleep deprivation, only to relapse on sleeping) -- to a synaptic-homeostasis hypothesis. Tononi's SHY says learning accrues synapses through the day and sleep prunes/renormalizes them to a set point; a separate literature finds depression involves LOW synaptic density (smaller brains, less glucose, radioligand correlations).
